Exploring Savannah and Isle of Hope: A Week of Charm

We spent a week in Savannah, and technically in the Isle of Hope. Isle of Hope is about 20 minutes from downtown Savannah and once was the “summer retreat” for families in the city. The homes and the old live oak trees were stunning! It made my daily walks very enjoyable!

Savannah was much prettier than I expected. The old historic district is built around beautiful squares with lovely landscaping, monuments, benches, fountains and statues. Each square is surrounded with old Victorian homes, churches, old business buildings etc. We took a guided walking tour and a tour of the Mercer-Williams house, where Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was set. (Which both Larry and I read before we left Savannah!)

I (Dea) made a friend at the marina, on one of Larry’s travel day’s we went to Wormsloe Plantation. The original owner asked that there always be a blood member of his family living on the grounds. Currently the 8th generation couple living there is in their 80’s. One of the family members in the late 1800’s planted over 400 live oaks along the lane to commemorate the birth of their son. It’s now a beautiful spot for proposals, wedding pictures etc.

Another day we made our way to Hilton Head Island. It is another beautiful beach town with live oak trees, beautiful homes and landscaping, shops, restaurants, and of course a marina with boats (always a favorite with us!). Hilton Head is known for golf and a lighthouse that is a well known site from the golf course. We climbed to the top to enjoy the view. We had a great seafood lunch and made our way to the beach. It was the first time it’s been really warm at the beach on this journey, we had a ball body surfing and playing in the waves.

All in all it was a great stay in Savannah. We made new friends, saw the sites and enjoyed a peaceful marina. Next up, Charleston!
